Do RFID Wallets Actually Work? The Definitive Answer

A reader wakes it, the card answers, the crowd moves on. No alarm, no receipt, no trace. The technology that lets you pay in a fraction of a second was never designed to check who is asking.
So the question is fair: do RFID wallets actually work? Yes. Measurably, physically, and for reasons that were settled science before the credit card existed. The four-second crime
Every contactless card contains a chip and a hair-thin antenna, and neither has a battery. The card sleeps until a reader's electromagnetic field arrives to wake it, at which point the chip borrows that energy, performs its handshake and answers. This is why a tap takes a fraction of a second: the whole conversation is built to happen fast and without contact.
A skimmer abuses the same courtesy. A payment terminal, or a phone with NFC, has no idea whether it has been presented to a willing customer or pressed against a commuter's coat, and the equipment involved is unsettlingly ordinary: the readers are sold openly, and a terminal fits in a tote bag. Security researchers demonstrate the technique so routinely it has a nickname, digital pickpocketing, and what it captures is the raw material of online fraud: your card number and its expiry date, lifted through leather, denim and coat wool as if they were not there.
The range is short, a few centimeters, which is precisely what makes crowds the venue of choice. The train at rush hour, the packed elevator, the festival crush: places where a stranger pressed against your pocket is not suspicious, merely Tuesday.
The defense is 150 years older than the crime
In 1836, Michael Faraday coated a room in metal foil, sat inside it with his instruments, and let violent electrical charges crackle across the outside. His instruments registered nothing. A conductive enclosure, he showed, carries an electromagnetic field around its outer surface and leaves the interior silent.
An RFID-blocking wallet is that room, shrunk to pocket size. A conductive layer sewn into the lining does to a reader's field what Faraday's foil did to lightning: the energy travels around the outside, and the card inside never receives the signal that would wake it. No battery, no electronics, nothing to charge and nothing to switch on. The card is not fighting the reader. It simply never hears the question.
