Ten years ago, RFID-blocking wallets were a novelty item sold mainly to nervous travellers. Contactless payment has since become the default way Britain spends money, and the wallet market has had to catch up with it. The question worth asking in 2026 is not whether skimming exists, but whether a well-made wallet still earns its place in your pocket once you know the full picture.

The theft that started it all

RFID skimming is not a rumour that got out of hand. It is a documented method of pulling data from a contactless card using a wireless reader, exploiting the same technology that lets you tap to pay for a coffee. Academic researchers proved the concept years ago: a peer-reviewed study of first-generation RFID cards found names, card numbers and expiry dates leaking in plaintext to unauthenticated readers, and built a $150 device that cloned a skimmed card as proof of concept. That is not theory. That is a working attack, published in an academic volume, not a marketing brochure.

The numbers behind the worry

Fraud has not gone away, it has simply moved. Contactless fraud losses rose 8% to £46.8 million in 2025, a smaller slice of the total than remote and card-not-present fraud, but a growing one nonetheless. Across the whole banking sector, payment fraud losses hit £1.28 billion in 2025, up 4% year on year, with more than four million reported cases. The honest context: remote purchase fraud, where criminals use stolen details online, is the bigger driver, up 3% to £423.5 million with cases rising 13%. None of this makes card-present skimming irrelevant. It makes fraud a broader, more persistent nuisance than any single fix can solve on its own.

What EMV chips actually fix, and what they don't

Banks and card networks have a fair point. EMV chip technology now underpins nearly every transaction, accounting for 96.2% of transactions by late 2024, and modern encryption makes wholesale card cloning far harder than it was for the first-generation cards researchers cracked back in 2008. That is genuinely reassuring. It does not, however, cover every card still in a wallet somewhere, and it does nothing for the sheer growth in contactless activity that gives criminals more opportunities to try. UK consumers pushed contactless spending up 76% to £117 billion as purchase limits rose, and card-not-present fraud cases climbed 22% in the first half of 2025 alone. More tapping, more data moving through the system, more surface area for something to go wrong somewhere along the chain. The bigger fraud numbers today sit in remote and online theft, not tap-and-clone attacks on the pavement, and any honest account of the risk has to say so.
