WHY TYPICAL RFID PROTECTION IS INEFFECTIVE

As consumers have become increasingly aware of RFID fraud, a flood of products has appeared to address these concerns. All the current products are based on the same principle of shielding the RFID card from electromagnetic waves using metal foils and materials. However, in practice, this approach is susceptible to flaws.

This is due to the way that electromagnetic waves propagate through space.

To ensure full protection, your cards need to be fully wrapped in metal foil with no gaps or spaces. This is almost impossible to achieve. A typical wallet with metal shielding can only protect against low-power reading devices, and only at certain angles.

HOW RFID SYSTEMS WORK

During a typical RFID card payment the card reader constantly transmits electromagnetic pulses (Step 1).

When a RFID enabled card is in range of the card reader it receives electromagnetic waves with its antenna and converts them to electric currents (Step 2).

The microprocessor generates a coded message with the payment or identity data (Step 3).

which is then transmitted back to the card reader using the card’s internal antenna (Step 4).

WHY VAULTCARD IS SO EFFECTIVE

VAULTCARD switches on automatically when it senses the electromagnetic wave emitted by an RFID scanner.

It responds to a signal strength a hundred times smaller than what your RFID enabled cards need. Vaultcard then creates a sophisticated electromagnetic jamming signal that blocks RFID readers.

This principle is frequently used in military jamming systems.

The stronger the signal of the scanner, the stronger the jam signal that Vaultcard will generate. This way your credit cards, passports, etc. remain protected from even the most powerful scanning devices.

HOW TO USE YOUR VAULTCARD

Place your VAULTCARD in the middle of your wallet. All RFID enabled cards will be protected within 4 cm (1.6 inches) of VAULTCARD. Cards can be on either side of VAULTCARD, so your wallet can be up to 8 cm (3.2 inches) thick, which should be more than enough.


Now you can use your credit card normally. Just make sure to hold it at least 20 cm (8 inches) away from the VAULTCARD.

The RFID technology that allows them to function is not entirely secure and can be accessed by scanning devices that are freely available online. VAULTCARD™ is a credit-card-sized tool, which can be placed inside a wallet to block electromagnetic signals – guaranteeing protection against RFID theft, while still enabling the use of contactless payments.

VAULTCARD's patented RFID protection technology is unique to contactless card safety devices and is based on highly sophisticated jamming signals frequently used by the military. We have invested a great deal of time in research and development to create our final VAULTCARD™ prototype. Its unmatched protection utilizes an extremely efficient design, which emits a complex jamming signal that completely shuts out any RFID communication.

In addition to a highly sophisticated jamming signal, VAULTCARD™ is extremely efficient in harnessing electromagnetic energy emitted by RFID scanners. This allows VAULTCARD™ to retransmit 1,000 times more power than RFID payment cards.  The table below represents laboratory test results of VAULTCARD™ and a typical RFID enabled credit card. For test purposes we used a popular 250mW NFC scanner with an electric E-field shielded antenna (so the scanner only working mainly with the magnetic H-field of Electromagnetic Field, diameter of magnetic antenna 45 mm).

Due to the form factor of an antenna embedded in the credit card, RFID scanner and VAULTCARD™, the most critical area is the so-called near field zone (within 0–3 inches between credit card and RFID reader). Do RFID blocking cards really work?

Most do not, or only barely. The common ones are shielding cards, essentially a scrap of metal foil that only works if it sits directly against the card you want to protect, in perfect alignment. VAULTCARD is different: it is a jamming card. When a scanner comes close, VAULTCARD wakes up, powered by the scanner's own signal, and floods it with a jamming signal that disrupts the read. It keeps working whether it sits in front of or behind your cards, and even a few centimetres away, so there are no blind spots. Internally lab-tested at 13.56 MHz, the frequency your contactless bank cards use.

Can my debit or credit card be scanned while it's in my wallet?

That is exactly the risk contactless technology creates, and it is why VAULTCARD exists. Drop one VAULTCARD into your wallet and it actively jams the 13.56 MHz reader signals that skimmers rely on, shielding every contactless card within 4 cm (1.6 in) of it, in wallets up to 8 cm thick. No foil, no fuss, no second wallet.

Do I still need RFID protection today?

Contactless is convenient, and criminals know it. A high-powered reader can wake a card from a surprising distance, through a bag or a pocket. VAULTCARD is an always-on, no-maintenance layer of privacy that sits quietly in your wallet and never asks anything of you.

What makes VAULTCARD better than an RFID sleeve or RFID wallet?

Sleeves and shielded wallets try to wrap each card in metal, which only works with a perfect, gap-free seal, and rarely against powerful scanners. VAULTCARD attacks the problem at the source: it jams the reader with a sophisticated, military-grade jamming signal instead of hiding the card. In internal lab tests it retransmitted around 1,000 times more power than a contactless card, so it stays effective even against high-powered skimmers. One card protects your whole wallet, you keep the wallet you already love, and there are no blind spots.

Does VAULTCARD need a battery or charging?

Never. VAULTCARD has no battery and no moving parts. It harvests power from the electromagnetic signal of any nearby reader, so it switches on only when needed and simply lasts for years.

How many cards can one VAULTCARD protect?

Placed in the middle of your wallet, one VAULTCARD protects every contactless card within 4 cm (1.6 in) of it, in wallets up to 8 cm thick. For a very thick wallet with more than about 10 cards, add a second, one near the top and one near the bottom.

Will VAULTCARD stop my own payments from working?

Only while your card is right next to it in your wallet, which is the point. To pay, just take your card out and tap as normal, holding it about 20 cm from VAULTCARD. If you use phone-case wallets: with VAULTCARD tucked in, Apple Pay through the case is paused, so slip the card out to pay. It never affects your phone signal.

Is VAULTCARD safe through airport security, and can it harm my other cards?

Yes and no, in that order. VAULTCARD works at around 13.56 MHz and is unaffected by airport metal detectors and X-ray scanners, which operate on entirely different frequencies; to them it just looks like a piece of plastic. And it emits no magnetic field strong enough to affect the magnetic stripe or chip on your other cards.

How do I know my VAULTCARD is genuine, and how do I test it?

Every VAULTCARD carries a unique serial number and hologram. To see it in action, try to read a contactless card through your wallet with an NFC-enabled phone or a shop terminal while VAULTCARD is inside; the read should fail.
