Empty your wallet onto the table. Most of what lands there has not moved since the last time you did this, and at least one card is for a shop in a city you left years ago. That small pile is the real argument between a cardholder and a traditional wallet, and it has almost nothing to do with taste.

Everything below can be checked in under a minute, in a shop, with the cards already in your pocket, and none of it appears on a product page. UK confirmed fraud cases rose 12 per cent to 3.31 million in 2024, and US identity theft complaints rose 9.5 per cent that year, yet the only part of that a wallet can touch needs a reader within about 10 cm of the card. Shielding is still sold as though a wallet were the last line of defence against every kind of card fraud. It is not, and pretending otherwise is how people buy the wrong object for the right reason. Count the last seven days, not the slots

Open your banking app and go back one week. Write down every card you actually tapped, swiped or handed over. For most people the list runs to three or four, which matches the three to four active cards the average American carries, and the habit is drifting further that way: in a typical week, four out of ten Americans make no cash purchases at all.

Buy for that number plus one, not for the number of slots you admire. A cardholder loaded with two cards more than it was cut for stops being slim within a month, because the leather takes the shape of the stack and keeps it. You can feel the difference sitting down on a hard chair: a stack that fits disappears, and a stack that does not announces itself through the fabric.

What actually gets taken, and what a wallet can reach

UK fraud losses reached £1.17 billion in 2024, with confirmed cases up 12 per cent to 3.31 million. In the US, fraud and identity theft losses topped $12.7 billion in 2024, with 1,135,270 identity theft complaints, 9.5 per cent more than the 1,036,845 logged in 2023. Those are the numbers that make headlines, and it is worth saying plainly: both totals include categories no wallet can reach. Breached databases, phishing messages and card details used online do not care about leather.

The physical version is skimming, and it is the one you can stand next to. In documented US cases involving SNAP and EBT benefits cards specifically, $2.9 million was stolen from more than 6,700 households in Massachusetts between June 2022 and March 2023, while more than 10,000 skimming complaints in New York accounted for around $7 million over a similar period. Those figures cover benefits cards rather than payment cards, but the mechanism is the part worth holding against the choice in front of you: a skimmer reads the card at the machine, once the card is out of your hands, so neither a cardholder nor a shielded lining changes that outcome. Score that column zero for both and stop letting it decide the purchase.

Contactless fraud is only one category inside that £1.17 billion, and it is a far smaller one than the headline figure suggests. That is the slice a shielded wallet is relevant to. The billion-pound total is not.

Ten centimetres is the only distance that matters

Contactless and RFID cards in wide use follow the ISO/IEC 14443 standard, operating at 13.56 MHz and designed for reads of roughly 10 cm between card and reader. Unauthorised scanners work to the same physics: they typically need to be within about five or six inches of a card, which is why the attempt is made in crowded places such as transit stations and tourist sites rather than across a room.

A shielded wallet answers that with construction, not software. The lining is a signal-absorbing material, commonly carbon fibre or aluminium, forming a Faraday cage so an external reader's signal cannot reach the chip and the chip cannot power up to transmit. Passive, permanent, and it stops working the moment the card leaves the wallet, which is the honest limit of it.

There is an active version of the same idea for people who refuse to change wallets.   1. The shut test. Load your real cards and close it. If the cardholder gapes or the wallet will not lie flat on the counter, it is already at capacity, and capacity on day one becomes strain by month three.
  2. The shake test. Hold it closed and give it one firm shake. A card that slides under a shake is a card that can work its way out on a café table or a train seat.
  3. The lining question. Ask what the RFID shielding actually is. A specific answer names a material and a construction. A vague one names a feeling.

While you are there, look at where the stitching sits beside the card slots. Thread running right on the edge of the leather is the first thing to give on any wallet, whoever made it, and it gives early.

Where each one honestly wins

The cardholder wins on the seven-day count. If your list came to five cards or fewer and you carry little or no cash, a slim holder such as the 20 g Moorgate removes weight you had stopped noticing, sits in a front pocket where you can feel it, and does not wear a curved shadow into the back of your trousers. It loses the moment you need coins, receipts, a folded boarding pass and a spare card for the school run.

The traditional wallet wins on tolerance. It absorbs the unplanned: the parking ticket, the notes from a cash machine abroad, the two cards you only use in one country. And if you genuinely carry cash every day, neither slim option is right for you, and a full bifold you already own beats a cardholder you will resent by the second week. We would rather say that than sell you a shape you fight with.

The verdict

Count the last seven days. If the answer is four cards and no cash, buy the cardholder, and buy it in the size you counted rather than the size you imagine. If the answer is six or seven cards, some notes, and a habit of not knowing what tomorrow needs, buy the slim wallet and get the shielding as part of the construction rather than as an accessory you have to remember.
